On the Gulf to Far East line
Our liner route runs from North Europe through the Mediterranean and the Arabian Peninsula to Singapore and on to China. That puts Singapore within reach from Dubai and from Europe on the same kind of vessel. Ships also stop in Singapore all year for fuel, which gives you more choice of dates than ports that are only called at in season. The trade-off is that Singapore can cost a bit more than some other Asian ports.
A handy hub for the rest of Asia
Plenty of owners use Singapore as a stepping stone rather than a final stop. The yacht comes in on a long-haul ship, then goes on to its cruising ground by a shorter voyage or under its own power:
- North to Phuket and the Andaman Sea
- South and east into Indonesia
- Up the coast to Malaysia's west coast marinas
Clearance and the GST question
Singapore is strict about paperwork, so this is worth getting right before the yacht leaves. A licensed shipping agent handles the arrival, and the port needs notice 72 hours ahead, 12 hours at the very latest. Pleasure craft have to be kept at approved marinas, yacht clubs or moorings. ONE°15 Marina at Sentosa Cove and Raffles Marina both offer customs and immigration clearance on site.
GST is the part people ask about most. Singapore Customs gives GST relief to pleasure boats that arrive under their own power and leave again. A yacht that arrives on a ship isn't described in those rules, so we check the permit and GST position with the agent before we book. You won't find out about a tax bill on the quay.
