Air freight services

Cigisped Air Freight was set up in 2004, after an acquisition by the group, to focus on air freight alone.

Cigisped Air Freight ships goods of any kind by air.

With a strong presence in Italy and on international markets, it covers the whole chain: collection, customs and documents, then fast delivery at the other end. Our staff have years of experience as handling agents for major airlines, so even delicate shipments are in safe hands, including dangerous and perishable goods.

Door to door, through our correspondents

For door to door deliveries we rely on an established network of correspondents in these regions:

  • Europe
  • North America and Canada
  • Middle East
  • Far East
  • South Africa
  • Australia
  • New Zealand

Dangerous goods

Shipped under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, the airline industry's working version of the ICAO Technical Instructions. Each shipment has to be classified, packed, marked and declared before an airline will accept it.

Perishables

Fresh and temperature-sensitive goods move fast from door to aircraft, with refrigerated vehicles for the road part of the trip.

High-value goods

Valuable cargo can be collected and delivered in armoured vehicles, matched to the nature of the goods.

Full load and groupage

The road legs, to and from the airport

Air transport is fast, so the road legs have to keep up. Collections and deliveries are made with vehicles suited to the goods. When price matters most, we can consolidate loads with one-day deliveries to the main airports, in time for the booked connecting flight.

If the shipment isn't urgent and road transport makes sense, we offer groupage, consolidated by pallet, container or unit load device (ULD), or a dedicated vehicle, across Europe and towards the East, where trade keeps growing.

Twice a week for groupage. Dedicated vehicles leave when you need them, and we give you the driver's details so the shipment can be traced and tracked.

How air freight is charged

Actual weight or volume, whichever is higher

Airlines charge light, bulky cargo by the space it takes up. Under IATA rules, the volume in cubic centimetres is divided by 6,000 to give a volumetric weight in kilograms, and the higher of that and the actual weight is the chargeable weight.

For one piece. For several, add up the volumes first. Some airlines and products use a different divisor.

Packaging and repackaging

Recorded at every step

We can document the state of the goods all along the way. Each agent and correspondent reports any problem, with photos where needed.

Fixed on the way

When needed, the goods are palletised, reinforced or repacked so they can carry on safely.

Covered in the air

An air carrier's liability for cargo is capped at 26 SDR per kilogram under the Montreal Convention, so valuable goods are worth insuring separately.

A boat by air

Some boats travel by plane when time is short. Here, a shrink-wrapped hull goes into a Boeing 747 freighter through its nose door.

For larger yachts, sea is the usual route: see our yacht shipping methods.

Questions about air freight

Why am I charged for more than my cargo weighs?

Because air freight is charged on the chargeable weight. If your goods are light but bulky, the volumetric weight (volume in cm³ divided by 6,000) is higher than the actual weight, and that is the figure used.

Can you ship dangerous goods by air?

Yes. They are prepared under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, and our staff, with handling agent experience, look after the classification, packing and declaration.

Is air always the best option?

Not always. For heavy or less urgent cargo, a container by sea or groupage by road is often cheaper, and very large pieces go as project cargo.

Can my goods be checked on the way?

Yes. Our agents and correspondents report the condition of the goods along the route, with photos when something needs attention.

Need to send something by air? Tell us what it is, how big it is and where it's going, and we'll send you the options that fit.
